AQUIFEM-N - Multi-Layered Finite-Element Model

AQUIFEM-N is a multi-layered finite-element aquifer flow model developed by Dr. Lloyd Townley, one of the authors of AQUIFEM-1 at MIT in 1979-80. The model uses linear triangular elements and is accompanied by associated grid generation and plotting software.

AQUIFEM-N can simulate steady and unsteady flow in single or multiple aquifers (2-D or quasi 3-D), steady flow in 2-D vertical sections, and steady and unsteady solute transport in a 2-D aquifer or vertical section.

AQUIFEM-N Model Features include: capabilities for simulating confined and unconfined conditions; spatially varying aquifer properties and recharge; spatially and temporally varying boundary conditions (prescribed head, prescribed flux and mixed conditions, with corresponding conditions for solute transport); leakage between aquifers, with simulation of layers which thin out or bifurcate; and automatic stream function calculations with steady flow in 2-D vertical sections.

Input to AQUIFEM-N is by ASCII files, prepared with any text editor. Preparation of data files is aided by a stand-alone grid generation package with many options for generating grids of triangular elements.

Output from AQUIFEM-N includes output to text files with a range of options, and output to unformatted files for rapid plotting of grids, contours, flow vectors and time series. An associated plotting package allows four modes of operation, from batch mode to fully interactive. Sequences of plots can be set up to facilitate model calibration, and many plots can be viewed at once on the same screen or hardcopy. A primitive animation capability is provided. Graphics support is provided for PC/Mac screens, PostScript laser printers, and laser printers/plotters which accept HPGL files.
